Bag Raiders, the electronic duo of Chris Stracey and Jack Glass, go back to the days of hanging out in the orchestra practice room in high school, sneaking out back to smoke cigarettes on their break. But it wasn’t until a couple years later they met back up and started the house phenomenon that is Bag Raiders. Together, they produce the sparks of light, aural gems and sonic booms that make up one of the most sought-after up and coming duos on the planet.
It was around 2005 they began making mix cd’s, a combination of hip-hop and 70’s rock that slowly pushed them into production, one of their favorite aspects of music making. Being DJs is what makes this Aussie duo so enticing. It’s no surprise how they’ve captivated the audiences of South America. Bag Raiders transcends typical dance and pop boundaries, showcasing the creativity of a band at the forefront of modern production.
In comparing the Australian music scene to the states and LA scene, they claim that it’s pretty similar–the difference being that there is a show every night of the week in LA, but they love an environment that runs on music and entertainment. ”Once you’ve been here for a while, you start to get hip to what’s going on and it comes to life in it’s own special way.”
Their show in Denver this past January may have been one of their very few shows of the New Year. They will be spending a good chunk of 2012 getting back in the studio and begin their writing/recording process for their next album which they estimate “could be one year, could take up to 6 years.” Their record label, Modular, is pretty relaxed and let’s the boys take their time, which allows for any number of outcomes. With the new surroundings of LA, we can only expect a plethora of electronic inspiration.
They will, however, be gracing fans with their presence in Vail at the Snowball Music Festival this year, their first winter show and festival. Don’t forget your jumpers boys, it will be a bit chilly in the luscious mountains of Vail, CO.
In the meantime, while you’re jonesing for some Bag Raiders, they’ve decided to throw out a mix tape every month this year. This idea came after their New Year’s gig in Brisbane — “One of our best DJ gigs in awhile. We get there, and no one is there. We’re not sure if it will be good or not, so we just started playing music we’ve been digging on lately. Then gradually people would come and have a little bit of a dance and over the two hours it’s like we went from zero to hero, it was insane…one of the best. By the end, people had their shirts off from dancing so much.”
They had to fly out straight after the gig, and were so exhilarated from the successful set, they started mixing on the way home, trying to re-create their own party they had just left. It’s a great way to showcase fans who don’t get to see their shows what it’s like when they dj, and the are providing it to you monthly. OofS can’t stop listening to the first two installments of mix tape o’ dancey goodness.
